MUERTES

I

Osip Mandelstam

Con un vaso
de agua hervida
aún sin enfriar
junto a una estufa
que mucho
no calentaba
estaba sentado
y repetía
esas palabras verdes
Laura y laurel
escritas en Avignon

cuando del lúgubre
día de invierno entró
la Muerte vestida de verde
después de haber viajado
diez mil kilometros
en tren y a pie
a tal fin,
y corriéndose para hacerle
un lugar junto al fuego, el poeta
le dio la bienvenida, y le pidió
noticias de su casa.

II

César Vallejo

La querida Muerte
le gritó al oído,
su oído hecho para registrar
hasta el más nimio, el más sutil
de los alaridos del gusano y
de las alegrías de la libélula,
y con la amabilidad que le concedía
a toda torpe cosa viva
que tropezase con sus botas rotas
se inclinó y
sin amedrentarse por su aliento negro
le dio el brazo y
se fue caminando con ella
por el camino que la trajo y
dobló en la esquina.

DEATHS

I

Osip Mandelstam

With a glass of/ boiled water/ not yet cold/ by a small stove/ not giving out/ much heat/ he was sitting/ and saying over/ those green words/ Laura and laurel/ written in Avignon// when out of the somber/ winter day entered/ Death in green clothing/ having traveled/ by train and on foot/ ten thousand kilometers to/ this end,/
and moving aside to give him/ a place at the fire, the poet/ made him welcome, asking/ for news at home.

II

César Vallejo

Darling Death/ shouted in his ear,/ his ear made to record/ the least, most finespun/ of worm-cries and/ dragonfly-jubilations,/ and with that courtesy he accorded/ all clumsy living things/ that stumble in broken boots/ he bowed and/ not flinching from her black breath/ gave her his arm and/ walked back with her the/ way she had come and/ turned the corner.
