TODAVÍA NO


Un sigilo en el aire que quiere decir:

las golondrinas volaron
hacia el sur mientras yo 
volaba hacia el norte otra vez.

Pero en el silencio 
hay pichones
que me hacen reír de mala gana
y grillos curiosos de mi ropa 
puesta a blanquear
sobre el pasto marrón.

Entonces sonrío.
¿Qué más se puede hacer?
La melancolía aburre.

¿Y si el pozo se seca
—y se secó—,
y si el número de bajas aumenta
—y lo hace—,
y si el verano se agota
antes de que lo haga 
entrar en mi vida?

No hay nada que hacer más que tomar
las migas que caen de la mesa de los pichones
—o morirse de hambre.
Y el momento de morirse de hambre todavía no llegó.

A stealth in air that means:

the swallows hace flown
south while I flew
north again.

Still, in the quiet there are
chickadees,
to make me grudgingly smile,
and crickets curious abouti
my laundry put out to bleach
on brown grass.

So I do smile.
What else to do?
Melancholy is boring.

And if the well goes dry-
and it has;
and if the body-count goes up-
and it does;
and if the summer spent
itself before I took it
into my life-?

Nothing to do but take
crumbs that fall from the chickadee's table
-or starve.
But the time for starving is not yet.
